Successful School Habits - Chicago Parent

After the challenges of the last few school years, this year promises to be better (fingers crossed)! As parents, we’re always trying to get and keep the school year started on the right foot so it’s no surprise that some educators and influencers across the nation are dusting off Stephen R. Covey’s bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

With a little effort and planning, those habits, created by Covey for business, are the secret sauce for parents with students of all ages.

Set goals. Goals help all of us get the things we need done actually done but creating clear long-term and short-term goals can help kids make a plan and stay on track. Plus, setting goals together goes great over ice cream as an awesome bonding moment.

Get organized and make a schedule. You’ve already filled the school supply lists but showing kids how to work with planners and color code their classes and assignments not only helps now, but throughout college. Planning when to do homework and juggle extracurriculars — and sticking to the plan — helps with time management for the rest of their lives. We like dry erase wall calendars around here for the schedule juggle.

Start with the tough stuff and keep distractions to a minimum. Encourage the kids to get work for their tougher subjects done first, then finish up with the easier stuff or the things they enjoy most. It’s like a little treat to themselves. Of course, keeping cellphones and TV off and noise down is a given.

Stay healthy. Make their brains happy with three healthy meals a day, and plan healthy snacks and a little exercise at homework break times.

Ask for help. Too often, parents think they must do it all themselves and not ask for help, a lesson kids pick up on. Make sure kids know it’s always OK to ask for help, whether it is extra time with the teacher or even hiring a tutor.
